Originally the game reserve of the Maharajas of Rewa, the number of tigers killed, before they were made a protected species, is astounding with a stupendous figure of Maharaja Raman Singh himself having shot 111 tigers by 1914. Besides animals, Bandhavgarh is also a stopover for many migratory birds in winters. A number of small birds can be seen in and around the National Park; the rare ones are the blue-bearded bee-eater, white-bellied drongo, Tickell's blue flycatcher, white-browed fantail, Jerdon's leafbird, gold-fronted leafbird, minivets and woodshrikes.
