Flanked by the rivers Banas, Gambhiri and Betwa on its three sides, Chittorgarh is an epitome of the Rajput legendary culture and heritage. The whole city speaks of its historic heroic sacrifices that are evident from the echoes of tales lying suspended in the airs of Rajasthan. Famous worldwide for its hilltop Fort, the story of Chittorgarh is a saga of gallantry, obstinacy and forgo. Thrice the ruthless enemies stacked the place till it finally succumbed to the mayhem of its attackers.
The first sack occurred in 1303 when a Pathan King Ala-ud-din Khilji besieged by the beauty of Queen Padmini inundated the fort in order to capture the majestic beauty. Then later in 1535 Bahadur Shah the Sultan of Gujarat weighed down the fort causing enormous massacre and it is said that 32000 men donned the saffron robes of martyrdom and rode out to face a certain death, and the women folks committed Jauhar (an act of self immolations by plunging in a large fire) led by Rani Karnawati. In 1568 history repeated itself when Mughal Emperor Akbar annihilated the fort to the rubble.
